Software questions.

If any of you guys are involved in the following maybe you could tell me about the software you use and how you rate it. Thanks.

Making music for your films.
Websites.
Special effects.

Also is it faster to download plug ins and the like before "america comes on line"? Or is it soley down to your modem?

I haven't used any software for making music as such... I've used things like CoolEdit to manipulate sound (i.e. streching, normalization, etc...)

If you want to have computer generated music (i.e. using samples, loops) - then try something like eJay - not bad for mixing & loops.

As for the websites... you got loads of options, you could do what I do and use notepad (hardcore) - or go with some WYSIWYG editor (like frontpage, or MS Word)

Special effects - I'm dabbling with Adobe After Effects at the moment... can't do much stuff yet (i'm still learning) - but it looks good!

Thanks tino, I'v seen ejay in shops but ive never met anyone who's actually used it, so I'm nervous about shelling out for it.

After effects is the bizniz when you get the hang of it. Anyone else?

There aint that much we cant do with that lot.

If the music you want to make it just beats and samples. I suggest you download the FREE copy of Acid Pro from there website. You can do LOTS of stuff with that alone.

Making music for your films.
I use a mixture of Cakewalk, my keyboard and more. It's not overly professional, so I usually get someone else to make it for me [img]smile.gif[/img]

Websites.
Notepad of course. It makes HTML. But if you want something for beginners, try MS Front Page (**** in a box) or Dreamweaver (html sex in a box)

Special effects.
A mixture of 3D Programs and whatever I'm editing with (usually Adobe Premiere). However, I always believe in not using CGI effects, and just creating the effects on scene.

I've got Dreamweaver, flash, swish, photoshop and acid.

Beuford: In answer to a q you asked a while ago, average age at film school is about 22.

Now for a stupid but important question. Ive always edited video on mac-easy firewire and all that. I bought a laptop pc second hand and im tryin to get premier for it. Course it doesnt have firewire, not even sure it has a video card.

So what do i need? I can connect the camera to the usb port right?

If it doesnt have a video card/ port, then you will have to use USB.
USB is a lot slower than firewire, so expect degradation.
You can buy PCMCIA firewire cards for laptops, that might be a good way to go.
